The New York State Division of Human Rights is the New York state equivalent of the federal EEOC. As a designated Fair Employment Practices Agency (FEPA), the New York State Division of Human Rights may coordinate operations with the EEOC under a work-share agreement. Furthermore, the New York State Division of Human Rights investigates state claims that are not covered by federal law or exceed the basic protections of federal law. Individuals complaining of employment discrimination in New York should file a charge of discrimination with the EEOC and with the New York State Division of Human Rights.

The New York City Commission on Human Rights is the New York City equivalent of the federal EEOC. Just like the State Division on Human Rights, the New York City Commission on Human Rights is a designated Fair Employment Practices Agency (FEPA). The New York City Commission on Human Rights investigates federal claims, state claims, and claims arising under city ordiances, including those that are unique to the City of New York. Individuals complaining of employment discrimination in the City of New York should file a charge of discrimination with the EEOC, the New York State Division of Human Rights, and the New York City Commission on Human Rights.
